Introduction by One Suddenly Blind Patient
December 7, 2005
I was “Suddenly Blind”. It was “the worst pain I have ever experienced. Everything was suddenly black, total darkness.”
Karin, now my caregiver, describes hearing “a bumping in the hallway”. She rushed to the hall.
“Are you all right?”
Three of us have been meeting the challenges of “Sudden Blindness” since that moment. This is a simple accounting of the experiences faced when one is suddenly blinded. It is not my biography. I have already written that, published in 2004. It is called Angel Kisses And My Beating Heart, My Life and Near-Death Experiences. This new book uses as the title the statement I now frequently make. We are writing I Can Feel The Sunshine with the hope that it will be an encouragement to others who may find themselves in our situation: one suddenly blind patient, one caregiver and one little dog, all three confused, scared and in need of encouragement.
I Can Feel The Sunshine is not written as (nor does it deal with) medical advice. This is written as an account of what we consider practical solutions invented to meet the challenges of my suddenly blind situation. I am only one of many suddenly blind patients; Karin is only one of many, many caregivers; and Chalena is only one of many caring little dogs. We share our experiences of walking in the dark together as our way of saying to others facing sudden blindness, there really is more to life than what we see. While I am blind, perhaps permanently, it is a great day: I Can Feel The Sunshine!
