Who Is George Smith Cook???
Question: Where was he born and when?
Answer: George Smith Cook was born in Stratford, Connecticut 23 February 1819 and died November 27, 1902.
Question: Where did you find that information?
Answer: The information I gave you is the same information I used on pages 16-17 and footnoted as footnote # 4 for chapter 2 in the endnotes when I wrote Photographer. .. .Under Fire, The Story of George S. Cook (1819 – 1902).
As you will find in that footnote,
I own the manuscript where that information is found.
Perhaps that manuscript written by my mother,
Lilian Cook Ramsay, granddaughter of George Cook,
is the only source for that information.
My mother’s manuscript is described in the “Documents and materials in the Cook family collection” found on page 183 of the Bibliography to Photographer. .. .Under Fire. We always celebrated my birthday, November 27, by remembering that was the same day my great grandfather died and I was reminded that I had a great heritage, which I should uphold. My mother did extensive research, some available in other documents and materials listed in that same Bibliography.
The Dictionary of Virginia Biography, Volume 3.Caperton-Daniels, published by The Library of Virginia, Richmond, 2006, on pages 423 – 425 cites the same information as I state. It also gives a bibliography at the end of the article with other sources for much information, though there is no other source cited for where and when he was born. You will note the name of the author at the bottom of the article is Jack C. Ramsay, Jr. The Commonwealth of Virginia and the University of Virginia honored me when they invited me to write that article and I am delighted that they included what I wrote in The Dictionary of Virginia Biography, Sara B. Bearss, Senior Editor. Their book is described as “containing 471 biographies based on extensive examination of original records, volume 3 documents the contributions of Virginians to four centuries of local, state, and national history.” It was published as “an indispensable research tool for teachers, students, librarians, historians, journalists, jurists, genealogists, archivists, museum professionals, and others who need reliable biographical information on notable Virginians from all walks of life.”
Question: What were the names of his parents?
Answer: We do not know.
We know my mother’s lifetime passion was seeking as authentic as possible information about her grandfather and recording this as collected data. She spent a lifetime on her search, saving everything in a special box, which she had tied with a gold ribbon. Searching for the parents of George Smith Cook was more than an interest for my mother: it was her passion, perhaps because both her grandfather and her father, George LaGrange Cook, became “Single Parents”, raising their children without their mothers who died.
My mother’s mother died when my mother was only five, a fact she mentioned often. As a child with only brothers and no mother, she was close to both her father and her grandfather, though her grandfather died when she was only eleven. Perhaps that is why her curiosity about her grandfather’s parents was so intense. I remember the occasion in which she presented her collection to my wife Karin who was an able writer in her own name. At that time I had just begun to be recognized for my writing career, having published two books. She gave what she had collected to Karin with the statement, “I can’t get Jack’s attention, so I am giving this to you. History has never recorded what my grandfather did. He was a famous photographer and should have his place in history. I have collected what I can and want you to write what Jack has not noticed is history in his own family.” As you see, Karin was able to capture my attention and Photographer. .. .Under Fire is the result. Together we are working on a companion book to be based on my mother’s scrapbook with never-before- published pictures, her father’s sketchbook, the family recipe book, and her father’s diary written while he was working for George Smith Cook.
Question: Have you noticed the parallel of George S. Cook to another Civil War photographer who was born in Connecticut, George N. Barnard?
Answer: My book, Photographer. .. .Under Fire, refers to George N. Barnard on at least four pages noted in the index of Photographer. .. .Under Fire, page 187. "Both were born in Connecticut in the same year and would die the same year. The two had become daguerreotypists during the same period, had developed professionally ... and had worked for Mathew Brady. .. Both would operate galleries in Charleston .. on King street ......."
