RE: HISTORY
Eastman Kodak made HISTORY in 1880
" For years experimenters had sought to replace the wet collodian (photography) process with a more manageable system. In the same year in which Photographer George S. Cook moved north (from Charleston to Richmond), E. and H. T. Anthony (Cook's northern contacts who sold prints, including Cook prints, in the north) began to market Eastman's dry plates. Although there were initial difficulties, by the following year, the new method could produce negatives that maintained sensitivity without moisture. It was from this experimentation Eastman later developed a flexible film that would make photography accessible to the amateur. Cook adapted to this in his new Richmond studio. "

Watching Eastman Kodak
STILL IN THE NEWS
119 years later |
|
"Sorry, Paul Simon, Kodak is Taking Your Kodachrome Away" says The Associated Press.
The Eastman Kodak Co. announced June 2009 the retirement after 74 years of their oldest film stock because of declining customer demand in an increasingly digital age.
The world's first commercially successful color film, Koda-chrome, imortalized in song by Paul Simon: "They give us the greens of summers. Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, ... so Mama don't take my Kodachrome away."
Kodachrome was the basis of countless slideshows on carousel projectors, the 8 mm reel of President John F. Kennedy's assassination Nov. 22, 1963, ... Photojournalist Steve McCurry's portrait of an afghan refugee for the cover of National Geographic in 1985.
If Photographer Geo. Gook and specialty dealer Anthony were still alive, they would probably be joining other devotees in stockpiling the remaining rolls of Kodachrome even though only one lab - in Kansas - still processes it.

History Is Mystery
What is the "Mystery" ... about this house George S. Cook, the "Photographer. . . Under Fire", built in 1860?
The house still stands today at 28 South Battery in Charleston, South Carolina, facing the sea and Fort Sumter where Cook rowed to take his famed Civil War picture of one of the first shells exploding midair.
Just what is the "mystery"? The Cook Mysteries
